Driver Education Classes
Registration and Payment Information
We now use GoFan for registration and payment. The cost for the Driver Ed course is $45.00 and the registration website charges $3.25 for each registration. The site accepts credit card, debit card, and Cash App. The amount charged to your card will be $48.25.
You will need to be online to register promptly at 9:00 a.m. Classes fill up extremely quickly; you will want to be ready once the registration link goes live.
Information Needed for Registration
Please have the following information ready:
- Student's DPS email address
- Student's first and last name
- Student's date of birth
- Student's grade level
- Student exceptionalities, if applicable (IEP, 504, deaf/hard of hearing)
- Student's phone number
- Parent/guardian email address
- Parent/guardian phone number
Students with an IEP or 504 must provide accommodations to their teacher at least 3 days prior to the first day of class.
Eligibility
Students wishing to take Driver Education must be eligible to receive a Driver Eligibility Certificate. DSA/Creative Studies students must be making progress toward graduating in order to be eligible to take Driver Education.
To take Driver Education with Durham Public Schools, a student must be 14 1/2 years of age on the first day of class and be in one of these categories:
- Attend a Durham Public Schools high school
- Attend a private school located in Durham
- Attend a registered home school located in Durham
Students who are dismissed from a Driver Education class due to behavior, attendance, failure to complete assignments, not showing up, or backing out after being accepted to a class will not be allowed to sign up to take Driver Education through Durham Public Schools again for 6 months.
Important: You may only register for a class at the school in which you are enrolled. If you register for a school you do not attend, you will be removed from the registration.
All classes meet over Teams/Zoom. If your registration is accepted, you will be notified once your registration information has been confirmed.

Attendance is required every day and students must be on time. Do not sign up for a class if you have a performance, dress rehearsal, practice, job, or other conflict during the class dates and times.
Steps for Registering and Taking Driver Education
- Students must be 14 1/2 years of age by the date the class starts and must pay the $45 class fee while registering.
- Students will receive an email saying they have been chosen for a class, as well as an invitation to the Canvas class.
- After completing the 30-hour classroom portion and passing the eye exam, students will be placed on the driving list and called in birth order.
- After completing six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction, students will receive a certificate showing that they have completed Driver Education.
- Students must take the Driver Education Certificate from their driving instructor to the school office.
- Two days after presenting the certificate, students may return to the office to receive their Driver Eligibility Certificate. Academic grades will be checked.
- The Driver Eligibility Certificate is valid for only 30 days. Do not pick it up until a day or two before going to the DMV to test for a learner's permit.
- Students may make an appointment with the DMV or walk in to take the learner's permit test.
Clases de Educación para Conductores
Los estudiantes que deseen tomar la clase de Educación para Conductores deben ser elegibles para recibir un certificado de elegibilidad. Los estudiantes de DSA que hayan reprobado dos o más clases el semestre anterior no son elegibles para tomar la clase.
Para tomar Educación para Conductores con las Escuelas Públicas de Durham, el estudiante debe tener al menos 14 años y medio el primer día de clases y pertenecer a una de estas categorías:
- Asistir a una escuela secundaria pública de Durham
- Asistir a una escuela privada ubicada en Durham
- Estar inscrito en una escuela en el hogar registrada en Durham
DPS utilizará un sistema de pago en línea para la tarifa de $45. El pago se realizará con tarjeta de crédito o débito durante el registro. Los estudiantes que no tengan una tarjeta pueden obtener una en una tienda. Tenga en cuenta que algunas tarjetas pueden tener una tarifa de servicio.
Los estudiantes que sean expulsados de la clase de Educación para Conductores por comportamiento, asistencia o por no completar asignaciones no podrán inscribirse nuevamente por 6 meses.

Pasos para inscribirse y completar la Educación para Conductores

- Completar las 30 horas del curso virtual y aprobar el examen de la vista.
